After several months of twists and turns, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has finally announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The elections will be held in seven phases, beginning on April 19, with the results being declared on June 4. As a result of this announcement, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is now in effect and will remain in place until the Lok Sabha election results are announced.

2024 Indian General Elections will be held in India from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024 to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The elections will be held in 7 different phases and the results will be announced on 4 June 2024. This will be the largest-ever election in the world, surpassing the 2019 general elections and will be the longest-held general elections in the country with a total span of 44 days (excluding the inaugural general election). The incumbent Prime Minister, Narendra Modi will be contesting elections for the third consecutive time.

The Legislative assembly elections in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha and Sikkim will be held simultaneously with the general election, along with the by-elections for 35 seats among 16 states.

The current Lok Sabha’s tenure is set to end on June 16, and a new House must be constituted before that date. Similarly, the terms of the assemblies in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha will end on June 2, June 11, and June 24, respectively. Depending on the election results, the party or coalition of parties that secures the majority of seats (272 out of 545 seats) will claim the right to form the government.

In preparation for the upcoming elections, the ECI has appointed two new election commissioners following the surprise resignation of Arun Goel and the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey in February. Prior to these appointments, the ECI only had Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. The ECI is entrusted with the responsibility of conducting free and fair elections in India. The Constitution grants the ECI the authority to direct, supervise, and oversee elections to Parliament, state legislatures, the post of President, and the office of Vice President of India.

Approximately 970 million individuals are eligible to vote in the upcoming elections, with 18 million of them being first-time voters. In this election, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aims to secure 400 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and 370 seats for the party itself. On the other hand, opposition parties have come together under the banner of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to challenge the ruling BJP-led NDA.
