Digital Payment Frauds Cross 5.83 Lakh Cases, ₹3,588 Crore Involved: Government

The Government has informed the Rajya Sabha that digital payment frauds have increased along with the rapid growth of digital transactions in the country. According to data shared by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks and financial institutions reported a total of 5,83,291 digital payment fraud cases between FY 2021-22 and FY 2025-26 (up to September 2025). These frauds involved a total amount of ₹3,588.22 crore, out of which ₹238.83 crore has been recovered.

Internet Banking and Credit Card Frauds Account for Major Losses

Among all categories, Internet Banking frauds involved the highest amount of ₹1,730.14 crore, followed by Credit Card frauds with ₹1,447.27 crore. Credit Card frauds were the highest in number at 2,43,849 cases, while Internet Banking recorded 2,42,562 cases. Debit/ATM Card frauds accounted for 94,991 cases involving ₹401.17 crore. UPI frauds reported only 457 cases with an amount of ₹2.13 crore during the period covered in the reply.

RBI Strengthens Digital Payment Security Measures

The Government said that the RBI released a discussion paper titled “Exploring Safeguards in Digital Payments to Curb Frauds” in April 2026. The paper focuses on reducing Authorized Push Payment (APP) frauds and protecting vulnerable users. The RBI has also conducted 1,489 Electronic Banking Awareness and Training (e-BAAT) programmes across the country. In addition, banks, RBI, and NPCI are running awareness campaigns through television, SMS, print, radio, YouTube, Instagram, and other social media platforms to educate people about cyber frauds and safe digital payments. The Government also clarified that there is no centralised mechanism to track expenditure on cyber fraud awareness campaigns.
