Canara Bank CGM appointed as MD&CEO of South Indian Bank
South Indian Bank has announced a major leadership appointment. Mahesh Muralidhar Pai, currently serving as Chief General Manager at Canara Bank, has been appointed as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of South Indian Bank.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Mahesh Muralidhar Pai as MD and CEO of South Indian Bank for a period of three years. His tenure will begin on October 1, 2026.
The appointment brings an experienced public sector banker to the top leadership position at South Indian Bank. Pai has spent nearly three decades in banking and has worked across several important areas of the financial sector.
Who is Mahesh Muralidhar Pai?

Mahesh Muralidhar Pai, aged 50, is a senior banker with close to 30 years of experience in the banking industry. He has extensive professional experience in governance, banking strategy, treasury, foreign exchange, retail banking, agriculture finance and MSME credit. His career includes leadership and administrative roles across different segments of universal banking.
Mahesh Muralidhar Pai is currently serving as Chief General Manager (CGM) at Canara Bank. In his present role, he is spearheading digital banking and innovation initiatives at the public sector bank.
During his career at Canara Bank, Pai has handled several strategic initiatives of the Bank. One of his major contributions includes his involvement in setting up Canara Bank’s gold loan vertical. Gold loans have emerged as an important secured lending segment for banks, particularly for retail, agriculture and other eligible borrowers.
He has also headed one of the largest zones of Canara Bank, giving him significant experience in managing large-scale banking operations and branch networks.
Mahesh Muralidhar Pai has worked across a wide range of banking functions. His professional experience covers treasury operations, foreign exchange, retail banking, agriculture credit and MSME lending.
Pai also has international banking experience. During his career, he worked in the overseas operations of Canara Bank in New York, USA. His stint in international banking provided him with exposure to overseas banking operations and global financial markets.
Mahesh Muralidhar Pai has also served as a Director of Canara Bank Tanzania Ltd. In addition, he has represented Canara Bank in several important financial and banking industry institutions.
These include the Fixed Income Money Market and Derivatives Association of India, Swift India Domestic Services Private Ltd and the Secondary Loan Market Association.
Apart from his role at Canara Bank, Mahesh Muralidhar Pai is currently serving as a Director in Karnataka State Financial Corporation. He is also a Director in Canara Bank Securities Ltd. These roles have added to his board-level and financial sector experience.
Mahesh Muralidhar Pai is known for his experience in banking strategy, execution and digital innovation. At Canara Bank, he has been leading digital banking and innovation, two areas that have become increasingly important for the Indian banking sector.
