Woman who Slapped SBI Branch Manager in Chennai Released on Bail

Kayalvizhi Azhagiri, daughter of former Union Minister M.K. Azhagiri, was arrested by Chennai city police on July 28, 2026, for allegedly slapping the manager of the State Bank of India (SBI) NRI Branch in Adyar. After being questioned by the police, she was released on station bail.

The case was registered on July 24, 2026, at the J-5 Shastri Nagar Police Station based on a complaint filed by SBI Chief Manager Namachivayam. Police then started an investigation into the incident.

CCTV Footage and Witness Statements Examined

During the investigation, police recorded statements from the complainant and other witnesses. They also collected CCTV footage, electronic evidence, and other related documents from the bank. According to the police, all evidence was examined as part of the investigation.

Dispute Began Over Non-Working Lift

Police said the bank building’s lift was not working. On the morning of July 20, 2026, Branch Manager Harsheen Singh informed building owner Kayalvizhi Azhagiri about the problem over the phone. Police alleged that she became angry during the call and verbally abused the manager.

Later that evening, she allegedly came to the bank along with one of her relatives, again abused the Branch Manager, and slapped him inside the branch.

Arrest and Release on Bail

Based on the investigation, police issued a summons to Kayalvizhi Azhagiri under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on July 27, 2026. She appeared before the Investigating Officer on July 28, 2026, as directed and was questioned. After the interrogation, police arrested her and later released her on station bail.
