Account holders and farmer organizations held a mahapanchayat on Monday in connection with the alleged fraud of about Rs 35 crore at the Sector Pi branch of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in Aichhar. As per Bank, the fraud is only of around Rs 10 crore but public alleges fraud of more than Rs 30 crore.
A female Sub-Staff misused the passwords of other employees and withdrew funds from accounts of customers.
Hundreds of farmers and victims participated in the mahapanchayat. During the meeting, strong anger was expressed against the bank management. The farmers gave an ultimatum to the bank management and warned that if the entire amount of all the victims was not returned, the bank would be locked down. The farmers said that any kind of injustice with the account holders would not be tolerated.
At the Mahapanchayat, account holders questioned the bank administration’s functioning. They alleged that the bank administration has been trying to cover up the alleged fraud of approximately โน35 crore. An attempt is being made to shift the blame for the entire matter onto a single female employee named Deepanshi, while the role of the then bank manager, Nisha Tirkey, should also be investigated impartially.
Account holders questioned how the higher authorities and branch management were unaware of such massive financial irregularities at the branch. The role of other responsible bank officials and employees should also be investigated.
Victims questioned that if the bank’s deposits are not safe, where should ordinary account holders deposit their hard-earned money? They alleged that the bank administration’s actions so far have been unsatisfactory. By blaming only a junior employee, attempts are being made to shield others involved in the entire matter. The Mahapanchayat demanded an impartial and high-level investigation into the matter, so that the roles of all those involved in the fraud can be exposed.
Demanding the cancellation of the bank’s license and arrests, the farmers and account holders participating in the Mahapanchayat took a strong stance against the bank, demanding strict action against the guilty officials and employees. Those with suspected roles should be investigated and arrested. The victims demanded that their entire deposit, including interest, be returned as soon as possible. They also demanded strict action against the bank and the cancellation of its license.
