Several branch heads of Punjab National Bank across the country have reportedly been suspended following surprise visits by senior officials. During these inspections, unauthorized persons were allegedly found present in cash sections and working on branch computers.

It is alleged that some branch heads have been relying on private individuals such as generator operators, recovery agents, insurance company staff, PTS personnel and sub-staff to manage customer services and banking transactions due to severe staff shortages.

Around 20 branch heads have reportedly been suspended across India in various cities. The bank had directed internal auditors (senior staff) to visit branches and inspect their functioning. The auditors found that, in some branches, private individuals were present on the premises and helping bank staff.

As per bank policy, outsiders cannot sit inside a branch and interfere in banking operations. Citing this policy, the bank has suspended the branch heads.

On the other hand, the branch heads said that there is a severe staff shortage in branches and that it is becoming impossible to run them. Therefore, they sought help from private individuals to manage daily operations and provide good customer service.

One suspended manager said, “The staff was on leave, and there was a huge rush in the branch. I requested the BC to help manage operations and provide good customer service. What crime did I commit? Why did the Circle Office not provide staff on deputation? Had deputation been provided, I would not have asked the BC for help.”

If the bank has taken steps to prevent outsiders from helping branch heads perform their duties, it should also ensure that branches have sufficient staff.
