Union Bank of India has announced the appointment of Dr. Debasish Prusty as the Government Nominee Director of the bank. The appointment has been made by the Central Government with immediate effect.
According to the official notification dated 14 May 2026, Dr. Debasish Prusty has been appointed in place of Shri Rohan Chand Thakur. The appointment was made through a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, Department of Financial Services on 13 May 2026.
The bank said that Dr. Prusty will continue in the role until further orders from the Government.
Dr. Debasish Prusty is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. He has more than 26 years of experience in policy making and implementation in areas such as public finance, sustainable development, environmental governance, urban governance, and development cooperation.
He also played an important role in India’s international climate initiatives. In 2015, while serving in the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, he contributed to India’s collaboration with different countries for launching the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
Dr. Prusty represented India in international climate negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He was also a member of the Standing Committee on Finance of the UNFCCC in 2016.
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from Manipal University Jaipur and an M.Phil in Environmental Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. He has also received training from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the field of finance for macro-economists.
The bank also clarified that Dr. Debasish Prusty does not have any relationship with any existing directors of Union Bank of India and is not debarred by SEBI or any other authority from holding the office of Director.
