According to a Korean Air official, the collision occurred during pushback at New Chitose Airport, performed by a third-party ground handler vehicle that slipped due to heavy snow. The incident was reported to Hokkaido Airports, the operator of the airport, around 5:30 pm local time. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the airline is actively cooperating with relevant authorities.

The Korean Air spokesperson mentioned that there were over 280 passengers and crew on board the Korean Air plane, while there were no passengers on the Cathay Pacific plane, which had already arrived, as per NHK reports. The fire department confirmed no fire, and there have been no reported injuries.

The snowy conditions in the region led to the cancellation of more than 46 flights at the airport on the same day. Prior to the crash, the airport had issued a statement informing passengers about flight delays and cancellations due to heavy snow, advising them to check with their respective airlines for details.

This incident follows a fatal plane collision at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport just two weeks prior, where a Japan Airlines plane collided with a coastguard aircraft on the runway. The collision resulted in the death of five coastguard crew members, with the pilot surviving but in serious condition. A passenger on the Japan Airlines flight described the moment of impact, mentioning a sensation of hitting something and experiencing a sudden upward jerk upon landing, accompanied by sparks, gas, and smoke filling the cabin.
