Thief snatches Chain from SBI Bank Employee in Chennai

A man snatched a gold chain from a bank employee in Triplicane, Chennai, on Monday morning.

The victim was A Monisha from Saidapet. She works at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch located on the University of Madras campus.

On Monday morning, Monisha reached Omandurar Government Multi-Specialty Hospital Metro station. She was walking along Swami Sivananda Road towards the university campus when a man approached her and allegedly snatched her three-sovereign gold chain. The man then tried to escape.

After hearing Monisha’s cries for help, public chased the man and managed to catch him. They handed him over to the Triplicane police.

The accused was identified as P Ramamurthy, 40, a resident of Triplicane. He was produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody.

Chain-snatching incidents remain a prominent issue across various Indian cities in 2026. The national capital recorded 2,503 cases of snatching (including chains and mobile phones) during the first six months of a single calendar year. This averages roughly 14 incidents every day.
