The Tamil Nadu government has announced a holiday on November 1, 2024 (Friday), the day after Deepavali, for all government offices, public sector undertakings, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions. The decision was made to accommodate the needs of students, parents, teachers, and government employees traveling to their native places for the festival.

In an official statement released on October 19, 2024, the government clarified that to compensate for the holiday, November 9 (Saturday) has been designated as a working day. The announcement stated, “The government has declared November 9 as a working day to make up for the holiday.”

This decision came after JACTTO-GEO, a prominent body representing government employees and teachers, appealed to the Chief Minister for the holiday on November 1. The association had argued that many teachers and government staff would find it difficult to return to work immediately after celebrating Deepavali in their hometowns.

With this new arrangement, government offices and institutions, which typically observe holidays on Saturdays and Sundays, will enjoy an extended break, giving employees more flexibility during the festive period.
