Shri Swaminathan Janakiraman appointed as Deputy Governor of RBI

The Central Government has re-appointed Shri Swaminathan Janakiraman as Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India for a period of two years with effect from June 26, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Shri Janakiraman has been serving as RBI Deputy Governor since June 2023.

Swaminathan Janakiraman also served as the Managing Director State Bank of India from January 2021 until June 2023.

He was born on 4 February 1964 and served the State Bank of India for 34 years and became a managing director.

Profile of Shri Swaminathan Janakiraman

Mr. Swaminathan Janakiraman worked over 33 years with SBI and held various assignments across Corporate and International Banking, Retail and Digital Banking, Finance, and Assurance functions.

As MD (Corporate Banking and Subsidiaries) of SBI, he oversaw the Bank’s Large Corporate and Commercial Credit business, along with its associates and subsidiaries. He also handled major non-bank businesses such as credit cards, mutual funds, life and general insurance, capital markets, and custodial services.

Prior to this assignment, he served as MD (Risk, Compliance and SARG), where he was responsible for risk management functions and the regulatory compliance framework of the Bank. Earlier, as Deputy Managing Director (Finance), he handled budgeting, capital planning, financial reporting, taxation, audit, economic research, investor relations, and secretarial compliance.

As Chief Digital Officer of SBI, he led the Digital and Transaction Banking verticals of the Bank. Before that, as Chief General Manager, he headed SBI’s Hyderabad Circle, overseeing the Bank’s business operations in the State of Telangana.

During his tenure in SBI’s International Banking Group, Mr. Swaminathan served as General Manager (Financial Institutions Group) at the Corporate Centre in Mumbai, where he managed SBI’s correspondent banking relationships.

As Deputy General Manager, he headed Global Trade Services and was responsible for trade finance business and trade operations across SBI’s overseas offices. He also served as Head of Trade Finance at SBI’s branch in New York. As SBI’s nominee, he was a member of the Board of Bank of Bhutan, an SBI joint venture in Bhutan.

Mr. Swaminathan has represented SBI on the boards of Yes Bank, NPCI, NPCI International, and Jio Payments Bank. He also served as SBI’s nominee director and Chairman of the Board of SBI Payments Services Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between SBI and Hitachi.

He is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and a Certified Documentary Credit Specialist (CDCS).
