Robbery Attempt in Indian Overseas Bank in Chennai

The Red Hills police arrested a man on charges of attempting to burglarize a bank located on Grand Northern Trunk (GNT) Road near Red Hills. The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, and the suspect’s actions were foiled by the prompt response of local residents and the police.

At around 1:45 a.m., the accused, later identified as 45-year-old G. Suresh, from Veerapuram, gained entry into the building housing the Indian Overseas Bank branch. He managed to break into the premises through a window. Once inside, Suresh attempted to break open the bank’s safe using a weapon. However, his actions triggered the bank’s security alarm, which immediately went off, alerting the surrounding area to a possible crime in progress.

The loud alarm drew the attention of residents living in nearby houses, who quickly became aware of the break-in. After hearing the alarm, they alerted the Red Hills police. The police, responding to the situation, quickly reached the scene. Upon arrival, the officers contacted the bank’s staff and sought their help in gaining entry to the building to apprehend the suspect.

With the cooperation of the bank staff, the police entered the bank and located the suspect inside the premises. Suresh was found trying to break into the safe and was immediately arrested. He was taken to the police station for further questioning.

Based on the bank manager’s formal complaint, the police registered a case and arrested Suresh for attempted burglary. During the investigation, Suresh revealed that his motives for committing the crime were driven by financial desperation. He admitted to having accumulated a ₹20 lakh debt due to his gambling habits, particularly through online rummy. In an attempt to pay off his debt, Suresh decided to rob the bank.

Suresh explained that he had waited on the building’s terrace for the last person to leave before sneaking into the bank. His plan was to steal money from the safe to settle his gambling debt, but he was unsuccessful due to the timely intervention of the alarm and the quick action of the police and local residents.

The police have continued their investigation, and Suresh remains in custody, facing charges related to attempted robbery and other associated crimes.
