Samastipur, Bihar: One more attack on Bank Employee has been reported in Bihar. This time, branch manager of Union Bank of India has been assaulted by miscreants.
Chandrashekhar Gupta, the Branch Manager of Union Bank of India’s Scindia Ghat branch, was brutally assaulted by a group of five youths in the Singhia Ghat area.
The incident took place on Monday evening after Gupta had completed his day’s work at the branch. Accompanied by Tanveer Alam, a field officer from Samastipur, he was heading home.
Due to heavy traffic in the Singhia Ghat market, the duo took an alternate route through the western Gumti near Raghunandan Seth High School and the nearby railway station.
It was along this less crowded path that five unidentified youths surrounded the bank manager and launched a sudden and violent attack. The assault left Mr. Gupta injured and in need of urgent medical attention. He was quickly taken to Vibhutipur Community Health Center (CHC), where he received treatment from the on-duty doctor, Dr. Rajesh Kumar.

A Growing Concern for Bank Employees
This incident is not just an isolated case of assault—it highlights a serious and growing concern: the safety of bank employees, especially those working in field roles or in rural and semi-urban branches.
Bankers, often seen as the face of the financial system in small towns and villages, are increasingly being targeted. Whether due to loan recovery pressures, misunderstandings, or in some cases completely unrelated criminal intent, bank staff are frequently placed in vulnerable situations.
Why Are Bankers at Risk?
There are several reasons why banking professionals are facing increased risk:
- Frequent travel for loan verification, recovery, or outreach in remote areas.
- Handling of cash and financial matters that attract criminal elements.
- Lack of security outside branch premises or during off-hours.
- Growing public frustration around banking policies or financial pressures that sometimes misdirects anger toward employees.
What Needs to Be Done?
- Stronger Police Coordination: Local law enforcement must actively engage with banks to ensure routes commonly used by staff are safe.
- Increased Security Measures: GPS tracking of field visits, emergency SOS buttons, and faster police response mechanisms must be implemented.
- Awareness Campaigns: It’s important to spread awareness that bank employees are service providers, not decision-makers in loan policies or recovery procedures.
- Support from Management: Bank leadership should support affected employees and ensure incidents like these are officially reported and pursued legally.
