Karnataka declared Public Holiday on Wednesday to honor S.M Krishna

BENGALURU: The Karnataka government has announced a three-day state mourning to honor former Karnataka Chief Minister and External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna. As a mark of respect, a holiday has been declared for Wednesday, and flags will be flown at half-mast at all prominent government offices.

According to the official order, no government functions or entertainment programs will take place during the mourning period.

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna (1 May 1932 – 10 December 2024) was a prominent Indian statesman who held several key positions during his illustrious career. He served as India’s Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to October 2012 and was the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. Additionally, he served as the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.

Krishna also held the position of Speaker of the Karnataka Vidhan Sabha from December 1989 to January 1993 and was a member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha at various times between 1971 and 2014. In recognition of his contributions to the nation, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2023.
