Medical advancements are outpacing insurance rules, prompting the consumer ministry to seek a rethink of the 24-hour minimum hospital stay requirement for claims. The move follows concerns raised by National Consumer Commission chief Justice Amreshwar Prasap Sahi on National Consumer Rights Day.

“Many surgeries and treatments now require less than 24 hours of hospitalization,” Sahi argued, citing innovative rulings by district consumer forums that approved claims even for shorter stays. He urged regulatory bodies like the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS) to adapt to these changes.

Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh confirmed plans to discuss the issue with IRDAI and DFS to find a solution. He also applauded the efficiency of consumer commissions at various levels, highlighting their recent success in resolving 177,000 complaints despite receiving 161,000 new cases.
