The Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance has issued an Office Memorandum regarding the proper use of staff cars in Central Government offices. The instructions are intended to ensure better use of government vehicles and prevent their misuse.
No Additional Vehicle for Officers Holding Extra Charge
The memorandum states that if an officer is already using an entitled staff car for their regular post, they will not be provided with another vehicle while holding the additional charge of any post in another Ministry, Department, Attached Office, Subordinate Office, Autonomous Body, or Public Sector Undertaking (PSU). Any vehicle that is not being used should be kept safely in proper custody.
Restrictions on Use of Vehicles from PSUs and Autonomous Bodies
The government has also clarified that Central Government officials should not keep staff cars belonging to Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), Autonomous Organisations, Quasi-Government bodies, or Government Undertakings at their disposal. Such vehicles may only be used when the officials are on official tour or duty.
Approval and Implementation
The Office Memorandum has been issued with the approval of the Secretary (Expenditure). All Ministries, Departments, Financial Advisers, Private Secretaries to Union Ministers, and other concerned offices have been directed to strictly follow these instructions.
