Government Appoints SBI Chairman to Board of Trade

The government on Tuesday announced the appointment of 29 non-official members to the Board of Trade. The new members include SBI Chairman CS Setty, Apple India Managing Director Virat Bhatia, and Mahindra & Mahindra Managing Director Anish Shah.

The Board of Trade is chaired by the Commerce and Industry Minister. It includes representatives from states, Union Territories, and senior officials from both the public and private sectors. The board provides a platform to discuss ways to boost manufacturing, exports, and trade.

According to a notification issued by the Commerce Ministry, the government merged the Council of Trade Development and Promotion with the Board of Trade in 2019. The move was aimed at creating a more coordinated consultation process with all stakeholders involved in promoting exports and imports.

These industry leaders will help implement District Export Hub initiatives. Their role will include conducting awareness workshops, identifying and promoting products with export potential, and helping state governments develop export strategies in line with the National Foreign Trade Policy.

The members will also advise the government on policy measures to increase exports. They will help prepare and implement both short-term and long-term export plans. In addition, they will review the export performance of different sectors, identify challenges, and recommend industry-specific measures to improve export earnings.
