Google Pay has partnered with India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI) to extend the use of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) beyond India’s borders.
Convenient Payments for Indians Abroad
Indians traveling overseas can now use UPI on Google Pay to make payments to foreign merchants. This eliminates the need for international cards and forex, making transactions more convenient.
International Expansion of UPI-like Systems
As part of the collaboration, Google Pay and NPCI will work on creating UPI-like digital payment systems in other countries. The goal is to simplify international remittance processes and make digital payments more accessible globally.
Seamless Transactions in Foreign Countries
When traveling abroad, individuals can use Google Pay UPI to pay foreign merchants in the local currency. This service is already offered by PhonePe and Paytm. Notably, GPay will join the list of apps and banks facilitating person-to-person foreign remittance through UPI.
UPI Payments Across Various Countries
Currently, UPI payments are accepted in several countries, including Singapore, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, USA, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and the UK. This reflects the global reach of the UPI system.
Excitement from Google Pay and NPCI
Deeksha Kaushal, Director of Partnerships at Google Pay India, expressed delight in supporting NPCI’s efforts to expand UPI internationally. Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), highlighted the excitement about creating a more connected international remittance network through the expansion of UPI’s cross-border interoperability feature.
