Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh: The Lokayukta team caught the branch manager of Canara Bank in Chhanera tehsil red-handed while accepting a bribe. According to reports, the manager had been regularly demanding commissions from customers on the approved loans under various government schemes.
A farmer named Vinod Lovnshi had applied for a loan of ₹6 lakh under the Acharya Vidyasagar Yojana for setting up a milk dairy. Although the loan was sanctioned, the bank manager, Radharaman Singh Rajput, allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹75,000. This amount was half of the ₹1.5 lakh subsidy that the farmer would receive through the scheme.
The manager had already taken ₹10,000 as an initial bribe when the loan was approved. Later, he demanded an additional ₹15,000, and the remaining ₹50,000 was to be collected in installments.
On Tuesday evening, when the farmer handed over another ₹5,000 as part of the bribe, a 10-member team from the Lokayukta office in Indore caught the bank manager red-handed accepting bribe. The operation was carried out under the instructions of Lokayukta Director General Yogesh Deshmukh, and was led by SP Rajesh Sahay.
Further investigation revealed that the manager had only been posted to the branch a year ago and had made it a practice to demand bribes from beneficiaries of government schemes. If customers refused to pay, their loan applications were deliberately delayed or rejected.
