The delegation said that a five-day banking week would provide bank employees with a more sustainable work schedule without affecting banking services. It suggested that weekday working hours could be adjusted to compensate for the reduced number of working days. Digital banking services, ATMs and other essential facilities would continue to remain available.

The delegation also stressed the need to make proper arrangements for elderly customers, people in rural areas and customers who are unable to use digital banking services. It said advance public communication and adequate staffing would be necessary to ensure that customers do not face difficulties.

According to the delegation, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), which represents bank managements, submitted a proposal on July 12, 2023, to declare all Saturdays as banking holidays. The delegation said the IBA’s recommendation was also recorded in the 12th Bipartite Settlement and 9th Joint Note signed on March 8, 2024. However, the government has not yet implemented 5-day banking.
