Allegedly, cyber fraudsters managed to steal approximately Rs 80 lakh from three bank accounts belonging to a Congress MLA in Assam. They accomplished this by submitting fraudulent Know Your Customer (KYC) documents and forged signatures.

The MLA, Pradip Sarkar, representing the Abhayapuri South assembly constituency, became aware of the situation when a cheque he had issued for Rs 10 lakh to an institution bounced on February 29 due to insufficient funds. Sarkar discovered that over the course of one month, money had been withdrawn from his three State Bank of India accounts under his name. He stated, “I did not receive any notifications on my phone or via email regarding the withdrawals, as the fraudsters had changed the associated phone number. I was occupied with the budget session of the assembly throughout February.”

Sarkar immediately visited his home branch of SBI in Abhayapuri to investigate the matter. “The branch manager reviewed the transactions in my accounts and informed me that the money had been withdrawn in small amounts on multiple occasions from various locations, including Bengaluru,” he explained.

Upon further inspection, the branch manager discovered discrepancies. The photograph on the account did not match Sarkar’s appearance, the signature was clearly forged, and the documents submitted for KYC were determined to be fake. “I have not submitted any KYC documents to the bank in the past few months, nor have I conducted any transactions. To verify this, I requested the branch manager to review the CCTV footage, which revealed an unknown individual submitting the fraudulent KYC documents,” Sarkar stated.

Sarkar promptly filed a case at the Abhayapuri police station and suspected the involvement of a bank employee in the fraudulent activities.

The police assured that they are conducting a thorough investigation from all angles and are confident in apprehending the fraudsters soon.

According to Sarkar’s affidavit submitted to the Election Commission during the 2021 assembly elections, he holds a total of five bank accounts in five different banks, including the State Bank of India.
