Just months before the Lok Sabha elections, the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee has announced a public holiday on Ram Navami. All the banks in West Bengal will remain closed as per NI Act 1881. The government issued a notification stating that April 17, 2024 (Wednesday) will be observed as a public holiday in celebration of Ram Navami, in accordance with Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881.

The BJP had been demanding a public holiday for Ram Navami in the state. Earlier this year, Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP criticized the Mamata government for not declaring holidays for Ram Navami and Makar Sankranti, while a holiday had been declared for Shab-e-Barat. In response to the notification declaring a holiday for Ram Navami, Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP IT Cell, claimed that Mamata Banerjee’s decision was an attempt to improve her anti-Hindu image.
