UPS Pension Benefits Extended to Retired Central Govt Employees

There is a good news for Retired Central Government Employees. The pension benefits of retired central government employees have been increased. The Government of India has announced that retired Central Government employees, who were enrolled under the National Pension System (NPS) and retired on or before 31st March 2025, are now eligible to claim additional benefits under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS). These benefits are in addition to the NPS benefits already claimed.
The finance ministry in January notified the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS), which promises an assured pension of 50 per cent of the average basic pay drawn over the last 12 months prior to superannuation. This is a big pension benefit offered to central government employees. Pension is really important when an employee retires from service. Employees were demanding Old Pension Scheme but Government launched a new pension scheme – Unified Pension Scheme. Now the benefits have been extended to retired central government employees. Eligibility Criteria
- The retired subscriber must have completed a minimum of 10 years of qualifying service.
- In the event of the subscriber’s death, the benefits may be claimed by the legally wedded spouse.
Key Benefits Under UPS
- One-Time Lump Sum Payment
- The beneficiary will receive a lump sum equivalent to one-tenth of the last drawn basic pay plus dearness allowance, for each completed six-month period of qualifying service.
- Monthly Top-Up Amount
- A monthly pension top-up will be provided. It is calculated as:
(UPS payout + applicable Dearness Relief) – NPS annuity amount.
- A monthly pension top-up will be provided. It is calculated as:
- Payment of Arrears
- Eligible retirees will receive arrears along with simple interest, as per applicable Public Provident Fund (PPF) interest rates.
Modes of Application
- Physical Mode:
Applicants may visit their respective Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) and submit the relevant forms:- Form B2 for the retired subscriber
- Form B4 or B6 for the legally wedded spouse

Important Deadline
- The last date to submit claims under the Unified Pension Scheme is 30th June 2025.
