If you use UPI for digital payments, there’s an important update you need to be aware of. Starting April 1, 2025, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) will begin delinking UPI IDs associated with inactive mobile numbers. This move is aimed at improving security and preventing fraud.

To ensure a smooth transition, NPCI has directed banks and payment service providers (PSPs) to update their records before March 31, 2025, and remove UPI accounts linked to mobile numbers that have been recycled or churned (deactivated and reassigned to a new user).

Why is NPCI Doing This?

When mobile numbers are deactivated and later reassigned to new users, old UPI IDs linked to these numbers can lead to fraud and technical issues. There have been cases where new users unknowingly received access to the previous owner’s UPI-linked accounts, leading to security risks.

To tackle this, NPCI is making it mandatory for banks and UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm to update their customer records at least once a week. They must use systems like the Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL) or the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) to identify and remove inactive numbers.

Who Will Be Affected?

If you haven’t updated your mobile number with your bank, you could lose access to UPI payments. Here are the key scenarios where users may face issues:

  • You recently changed your mobile number but haven’t updated it with your bank.
  • You are using UPI on an inactive or deactivated number.
  • You surrendered your old SIM but didn’t update your mobile number in your bank records.

How to Avoid Losing UPI Access?

To ensure uninterrupted access to UPI, you should:

  • Make sure your bank account is linked to your current, active mobile number.
  • Update your mobile number in your bank records before April 1.
  • If you recently changed your number, check with your bank to confirm the update.

Final Thoughts

With digital payments becoming a part of everyday life, ensuring your UPI account is linked to an active mobile number is crucial. If your mobile number has been inactive for a long time, your UPI services might be suspended. To avoid any inconvenience, update your bank records before the deadline and continue using UPI without disruptions.
