An affluent couple from Gujarat, Bhavesh Bhandari and his wife have donated nearly ₹200 crore and embraced monkhood, with the intention to embark on a spiritual journey for salvation. In a ceremony held in February, the couple willingly parted with all their wealth, and they will officially commit to a life of renunciation during an upcoming event later this month.

Bhavesh Bhandari, a businessman from Himmatnagar who was previously involved in the construction business, follows in the footsteps of his 19-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son, who both adopted monkhood in 2022. According to members of their community, Bhavesh and his wife were deeply inspired by their children’s decision to “renounce their material attachments and embrace the ascetic path.”

Once they take their pledge on April 22, the couple will be required to sever all family ties and relinquish all materialistic possessions. They will embark on a barefoot journey across India, relying solely on alms for sustenance. During this journey, they will only be allowed to possess two white garments, a bowl for alms, and a “rajoharan,” which is a white broom used by Jain monks to gently sweep away insects before they sit, symbolizing their commitment to non-violence.

The Bhandari family’s decision, especially considering their immense wealth, has captured the attention of the entire state. They join a select group of individuals, like Bhavaralal Jain, who have previously renounced their vast fortunes in pursuit of a life of restraint. Bhavaralal Jain, in particular, is renowned for pioneering the micro-irrigation system in India.

As part of their journey towards monkhood, the Bhandari couple, along with 35 others, conducted a solemn procession spanning four kilometers, during which they donated all their possessions, including mobile phones and air conditioners. Videos of the procession depict the couple atop a chariot, adorned in regal attire.

In Jainism, taking ‘diksha’ is a momentous commitment, where the individual willingly embraces a life devoid of material comforts and instead relies on alms. This commitment also involves wandering barefoot across the country.

Interestingly, last year, a wealthy diamond merchant and his wife from Gujarat undertook a similar path, following in the footsteps of their 12-year-old son who had adopted monkhood five years prior. Coincidentally, just like their son, who rode a Ferrari during his diksha ceremony, the couple embarked on their spiritual journey in a Jaguar.

In 2017, another affluent couple from Madhya Pradesh made headlines when they donated ₹100 crore and left their three-year-old daughter behind to become monks. Sumit Rathore, 35, and his wife Anamika, 34, entrusted their daughter’s care to her grandparents before embarking on their transformative journey. Prior to Sumit’s initiation as a monk, the Gujarat State Commission for Protection of Child Rights sought a report from the civil and police administration to ensure the future well-being of their daughter, Ibhya, who would no longer have any parental relationship due to her parents’ new path as monks.
