What Happened: The Story of Pahalgam Attack?
This is one of the worst attacks in recent times in Jammu and Kashmir. A group of armed terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow around 2:30 PM on Tuesday. The attackers were wearing army-style clothes, which made it difficult for people to immediately recognize them as terrorists.
According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists came very close to the tourists before suddenly starting to shoot. Panic broke out as the gunshots rang through the area. Many tourists, including women and children, tried to run for safety, but since the meadow is a wide, open space with little shelter, they had nowhere to hide.
Heart-wrenching scenes followed — people were seen lying injured on the ground, and some had lost their lives. Visuals from the site showed locals rushing in to help the victims, while women cried out in fear and pain.
The attack took place in Baisaran, a scenic grassland known for its beauty and often called the “mini Switzerland” of Kashmir. It is located about 5 kilometers from Pahalgam hill station and is accessible only by foot or on ponies. Tourists were enjoying pony rides, food, and the peaceful view when the peaceful atmosphere was shattered by the sudden firing.
Soon after the attack, security forces reached the area and sealed it off. An anti-terror operation was launched to find the attackers. The usually lively town of Pahalgam, filled with tourists earlier in the day, fell silent as fear and grief took over.
The Resistance Front, a terrorist group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Political Developments
Condemning the terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those behind the heinous act will be brought to justice. Mr. Modi held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the terrorist attack, and directed him to take all necessary measures in response to the incident. Mr. Shah has left for Srinagar to hold an urgent security review meeting with all the agencies.
