Security Guard Arrested for Shooting Co-worker at Union Bank of India Currency Chest in Ahmedabad

In a shocking incident at the Union Bank of India Currency Chest in Navrangpura on C G Road, Ahmedabad, a security guard allegedly shot and assaulted his colleague on Thursday afternoon. The attack reportedly stemmed from a month-old workplace dispute.

The injured guard, Imran Khan Baloch (44), a retired Army personnel working with ESPS Security, is being treated at Narayani Hospital in Rakhial. He suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. The accused, Maheshkumar Mehariya (55), is a retired CRPF jawan and armed security guard at the same bank. As per reports, he attacked Imran around 12:15 pm in the basement of Union bank.

Imran said that about a month ago, he had playfully patted Mehariya on the stomach while on duty. Mehariya later became upset. “Three days later, Maheshkumar told me that my pat caused him severe stomach pain. I apologised and even offered to let him hit me back,” Imran stated.

On Thursday, while Imran was returning from the washroom, Mehariya allegedly shot him from behind with his licensed double-barrel gun, hitting him in the back of the leg. Imran also said that Mehariya struck him with the gun’s butt on his thigh, trying to kill him.

As blood oozed from the wound, branch manager Sushmit Roy and other staff rushed to help. They called 108 emergency services. Imran was first taken to Asarwa Civil Hospital and later moved to Narayani Hospital for further treatment.

Police said the accused fled immediately after the attack. A case has been registered under attempt-to-murder sections and relevant provisions of the Arms Act.

“The weapon is licensed. The motive seems to be a personal grudge, but we are verifying all details, including the weapon’s permit and sequence of events,” said a senior police officer.

Police have recorded statements from eyewitnesses present during the incident. Efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the accused.
