The Rajasthan High Court has quashed the action against the branch manager of the State Bank of India’s Bhiwadi branch who exposed a fraudulent housing loan scam worth Rs 51 lakh. The High Court directed the bank to conduct an independent and impartial investigation into the four-year-old case. Following the court’s order, the Anti-Corruption Bureau has filed a case against two senior bank officials on charges of demanding bribe and criminal conspiracy.
Vivek Sharma, who assumed the position of Chief Manager of the Bhiwadi branch in Jaipur district in June 2018 ,uncovered a fraudulent housing loan case of ₹51 lakh from 2015 in April 2019. When he initiated legal action against the employees involved, senior officials became angry. The officials suspended Vivek Sharma, who exposed the scam, and the accused officials also filed a lawsuit against him.
After suspension, Vivek Sharma requested for payment of his pending salary and allowances. It is alleged that the bank officials demanded a bribe of Rs 20 lakh in exchange for releasing the pending salary and allowances. When Vivek Sharma complained against the officials who demanded bribe, instead of hearing his side in the investigation process, punitive action was recommended against him. After this, the then branch manager Vivek Sharma filed a petition in the High Court for a fair investigation.
Hearing the petition of the former branch manager, the High Court on Thursday cancelled the action taken against him. The court gave clear instructions to the bank to conduct an independent inquiry into the entire matter.
Acting promptly on the orders of the High Court, the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case against two officers. The Bureau has registered a case of criminal conspiracy and demanding bribe against the then Deputy General Manager of Udaipur Administrative Office Dinesh Pratap Tomar and the then Chief Manager Awadhesh Pratap Singh, a resident of Jaipur. More details will be released soon.
