The Telangana Government has appointed Sandeep Kumar Sultania, a senior IAS officer from the 1998 batch, as the new Finance Secretary of the state. This decision was officially announced on May 12, 2025.
Sultania takes over the key role from K. Ramakrishna Rao, who was recently promoted to Chief Secretary of Telangana after the retirement of A. Santhi Kumari on April 30. Although Mr. Ramakrishna Rao had been managing the Finance Department for nearly ten years, and continued to do so even after becoming Chief Secretary, the government has now relieved him of those additional responsibilities.
Taking Charge at a Critical Time
Sandeep Kumar Sultania is stepping into the Finance Secretary role at a challenging time. Telangana is currently facing financial stress, with state revenues not meeting expectations. The government is exploring different ways to improve its financial health — including the monetization of government-owned properties to raise funds and fill the resource gap.
In addition to his new role, Mr. Sultania will continue to hold full additional charge as Principal Secretary for both the Planning Department and the Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department.
What Lies Ahead
As Finance Secretary, Sultania will be responsible for managing the state’s budget, expenditure, revenue generation, and overall fiscal planning. With Telangana’s current financial situation, his role will be crucial in ensuring better financial stability, resource allocation, and in supporting the government’s development goals.
His experience in administration and planning will be key in helping the state overcome its financial challenges and work toward a more sustainable economic path.
