Review Meeting of RRBs: In Chennai, a meeting was led by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday. The meeting included important people from Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) in the southern area.
Other important people were also there, like the Secretary from the Department of Financial Services and senior officials from the Reserve Bank of India. Representatives from the Finance Departments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karnataka were also present. Big banks like State Bank of India, Indian Bank, Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, and NABARD were represented too.
Sitharaman talked about how RRBs should keep working on important government plans like PM Jan Dhan Yojana, PM Mudra Yojana, and PM SVANidhi. She said that RRBs in the southern region are doing better than the rest of the country in some areas.
Sitharaman also said that RRBs should try to have more people using current and savings accounts. She wanted RRBs to focus on getting more customers to use digital banking, as the government is trying to make things more digital. She suggested that RRBs work with the RBI and state authorities to be more available in the different states.
While Sitharaman was in Chennai, she met with Vijay Sankar, Deputy Chairman of The Sanmar Group, and Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director of TVS Capital Funds.
