A coalition of railway unions, known as the Joint Forum For Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS), has issued a threat to halt all train services across the country starting from May 1. The unions are demanding the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme and claim that the government has shown no commitment to their cause.

Shiv Gopal Mishra, the Convener of JFROPS and General Secretary of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, stated that direct action is now the only option left. Representatives from various federations under JFROPS have agreed to formally notify the Railway Ministry on March 19 about the planned nationwide strike, which is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2024, International Labour Day. Mishra also mentioned that other government employee unions, who are part of JFROPS, will join the railway workers in the strike.

In a press release, JFROPS requested all member organizations to take appropriate action and make necessary preparations to serve strike notices to their respective Administrations. Mishra emphasized that the Old Pension Scheme is in the best interest of the workers, whereas the New Pension Scheme does not adequately address employee welfare.
