‘Mule Accounts’ Fraud increasing rapidly in India

Reports have indicated a significant increase in mule accounts fraud cases in India. According to the latest findings from the report ‘2024 Digital Banking Fraud Trends in India’ by BioCatch, mule account frauds accounted for 55% of all frauds in the country.

Mule accounts are bank accounts owned by individuals who have been deceived by fraudsters into laundering stolen or illegal money through their accounts. These individuals either willingly or unknowingly provide their account details to scammers, who then use the accounts to hide and transfer the stolen or illicit funds.

The use of mule accounts allows criminals to move money through multiple accounts, often in different countries, making it more difficult for law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrators.

To protect themselves from falling into the trap of mule account scams, users should be aware of the following measures:

Five Ways to Safeguard Against Mule Account Scams

  1. Be cautious of sharing personal information: Avoid sharing sensitive personal information, such as bank account details or login credentials, with unknown individuals or suspicious websites.
  2. Beware of phishing attempts: Be vigilant about phishing emails, messages, or phone calls that attempt to trick you into revealing your personal information. Always verify the authenticity of the source before providing any sensitive information.
  3. Use strong and unique passwords: Create strong and unique passwords for your online banking accounts. Avoid using easily guessable passwords and consider using a password manager to securely store your credentials.
  4. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for your online banking accounts whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a unique code sent to your mobile device, in addition to your password.
  5. Regularly monitor your accounts: Keep a close eye on your bank account transactions and statements. Report any suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions to your bank immediately.

By following these precautions, users can reduce the risk of falling victim to mule account scams and protect their financial security.
