INTUC Urges FM Sitharaman to implement 5-day Banking

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to consider the pending demands of bank officers and employees, including the demand for a five-day working week.

In a letter dated October 7, 2026, INTUC President and former Rajya Sabha Member Dr. G. Sanjeeva Reddy said that the organisation, which has a membership of around 3.3 crore, is concerned about the unresolved issues of bank officers and employees.

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) is a national trade union centre in India. Founded on 3 May 1947, it is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. The INTUC has a membership of over 30 million.

Dr. Reddy specifically mentioned the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) demand for a five-day working week. He said the demand appears genuine and can be implemented by compensating for the working days through an increase in daily working hours. He also referred to the demand for a non-discriminatory incentive scheme and other pending issues concerning bank employees.

The INTUC President said that his organisation remains committed to working on Gandhian principles to strengthen India’s public banking system while protecting the rights and dignity of bank employees and officers.

In the letter addressed to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, INTUC requested the government to consider the demands of bank officers and employees favourably. The letter was signed by Dr. G. Sanjeeva Reddy.

The demand for a five-day banking week has been pending since March 2024. The 12th Bipartite Settlement (12th BPS) was signed in March 2024, under which the IBA agreed to implement a five-day working week, and the proposal was sent to the Government for approval. However, more than two years have passed, and the Government has still not implemented the five-day banking system.
