From Bank to Politics: SBI PO becomes Bihar’s Deputy CM
Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has been sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister on 15 April 2026. He has been a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly since 1982, and has constantly served in Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s cabinets.

But Did You Know? Vijay Chaudhary was working with SBI before entering politics. Before entering politics, Vijay Chaudhary worked as a probationary officer at the State Bank of India (SBI). However, after his father’s death in 1982, he left his secure job and chose politics.
Vijay Choudhary was born in Dalsinghsarai, Samastipur district of Bihar in a Bhumihar Brahmin family. His father, Jagdish Prasad Chaudhary, had been a freedom fighter, an Indian National Congress politician and a three term member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Dalsinghsarai constituency.
He completed his Master of Arts in history from Patna University in 1979 and joined the State Bank of India as a Probationary Officer in Trivandrum in the same year.
After the demise of his father in 1982, Vijay Chaudhary resigned from SBI and won the subsequent by-election from Dalsinghsarai on a Congress ticket.

He began his political career by winning the Dalsinghsarai by-election in 1982. Initially, he joined the Congress party and became an MLA in 1985 and 1990. At that time, he was considered close to the then Chief Minister of Bihar, Jagannath Mishra.
In 2005, he joined the Janata Dal (United) and began a new political career with Nitish Kumar. Vijay Chaudhary held important positions within the JDU, including General Secretary and State President.
He has consistently won the Sarairanjan Assembly constituency since 2010, and in the 2025 elections, he proved his popularity by winning by a margin of over 20,000 votes.
