In a shocking incident that unfolded inside a public sector bank in Manjummel, Ernakulam, a female bank employee was seriously injured after being stabbed with knife by a former gold appraiser working with the Bank. The incident took place at the Union Bank of India’s Manjummel branch in Kerala.

The victim, L. Indu Krishnan, aged 35, is the Assistant Manager of the branch and a resident of Mavelikkara West Fort Ananda Bhavan. She was allegedly attacked by Senthil Kumar, 44, a former gold appraiser at the same branch. Senthil Kumar, who hails from TKS Puram in Kodungallur, entered the bank and stabbed Indu, causing serious injuries to her right palm and neck.

Following the attack, Indu was immediately rushed to a private hospital and is undegoing treatment.

The attack led to chaos inside the branch. Hearing the commotion, other bank employees rushed to the scene and managed to snatch the knife from Senthil Kumar. However, in a dramatic turn of events, he grabbed another knife and ran into the washroom. There, he stabbed himself in an apparent suicide attempt.

The police were called in promptly. Upon arriving, they broke open the locked washroom door and found Senthil Kumar injured. He was taken into custody and immediately shifted to the Ernakulam Government Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Why Gold Appraiser attacked Lady Officer in Union Bank of India Kerala Branch?

Preliminary investigations have revealed that Senthil Kumar had not been attending work since November 2024. He had reportedly been upset because the job of gold appraiser—which he previously held—was assigned to another person. Police officials believe that this professional grievance may have triggered the violent act.

The police have registered a case and an investigation is ongoing. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning bank staff to understand the full sequence of events. Additional security measures are also expected to be introduced in the branch following the incident.

This attack has raised concerns over workplace safety in banks, especially in branches where customers and employees often interact in close quarters. The bank management has yet to release an official statement.

Earlier, a branch manager of Union Bank of India in Nawada was attacked him with a knife. Bank manager Abhay Kumar was working in the Union Bank branch. At that time there was no police or security personnel in the bank. Meanwhile, Gautam Kumar, a young man running a private Aadhaar service center, suddenly entered his cabin and started arguing on some issue. After this, Gautam first threw chilli powder on his face and then attacked him with a knife. He stabbed the manager on the head and other places, due to which he was seriously injured.

  1. This is insane. Moreover, there will a board displayed outside the branch, near the entrance prohibiting entering the premises with weapons. Displaying board alone is not sufficient, there should be a guard posted at the entrance with a scanner similar to those we find in airports else this kind of incidents cannot be ruled out.

Merely posting a guard for name sake will not serve the purpose. They need to be very attentive and watchful, but how are guards being used these days, for every other miscellaneous work other than his actual duty.

Management should understand the Seriousness and ensure safety of every employee who are discharging their duties on behalf of the management risking thier lives for no fault of theirs.
