Daily Wager embezzled over Rs.1 Crore in J&K Bank
A daily wager in J&K Bank embezzled over Rs.1 crore. Yes you read it right. Over Rs.1 crore was siphoned off by a daily wage worked working in Jammu & Kashmir Bank .
The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch has filed a chargesheet against a daily wage worker accused of carrying out a ₹1.04 crore bank fraud.
The chargesheet was submitted before the Court of the Additional Special Judge (Anti-Corruption) in Srinagar on Wednesday in connection with FIR No. 20/2018.
The accused, Rouf Mohammad Wani, a resident of Hanjura in Chadoora, Budgam, has been charged under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 409, and 201 of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), along with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to the investigation, Wani worked as a daily wage employee at the J&K Bank business unit in Dada Ompora, Chadoora. He misused his position to carry out unauthorized banking transactions, illegally debit customer accounts, and manipulate Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan limits.
But how a daily wage employee can do such fraud remains a mystery. Daily wage employees are generally private employees that are hired by branch to help in daily activities such as branch cleaning, record maintenance, etc.
Experts say that in this case, he might have gained access to the system and employees IDs. Using those IDs, he might have committed this fraud.
The investigation found that Wani allegedly obtained and misused official banking credentials to transfer ₹1,04,48,141 into private bank accounts.
Wani acted with the intention of obtaining illegal financial benefits for himself and his family members, causing a significant financial loss to the bank.
After completing the investigation and collecting forensic and documentary evidence, the EOW filed the chargesheet before the court for further legal proceedings.
Following the case, the EOW also issued a public advisory asking people to remain alert to financial frauds and to immediately report any suspicious banking activities to the Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch.
