The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer and a private individual for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25 lakh. The IRS officer, Amit Kumar Singal, a 2007-batch officer currently serving as Additional Director-General with the Directorate of Taxpayer Services in Delhi, was arrested along with his associate, Harsh Kotak.
The CBI registered a case on May 30, 2025, after receiving a complaint that the senior tax official had demanded an illegal payment of ₹45 lakh. In exchange, he allegedly promised to provide favourable treatment in matters related to the Revenue and Income Tax Department. The complaint also stated that the demand came with threats of legal action, heavy penalties, and harassment if the money was not paid.
Following the complaint, the CBI laid a trap to catch the accused in the act. Harsh Kotak, acting on behalf of the IRS officer, was caught red-handed in Mohali, Punjab, while receiving ₹25 lakh in cash from the complainant at the IRS officer’s residence. Shortly after, Amit Kumar Singal was picked up by CBI officials from his official residence in Vasant Kunj, Delhi.
CBI teams later conducted search operations at multiple locations connected to the accused, including premises in Delhi, Punjab, and Mumbai, to gather further evidence in the case.
The arrests highlight the agency’s continued efforts to combat high-level corruption and ensure accountability among senior officials in government departments. The investigation is currently ongoing and more details will be released soon.
