CBI arrests Railway Officers for taking Bribe and Favouring Candidates in Departmental Exam

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered a bribery network involving two Indian Railway Personnel Service (IRPS) officers and others at the Divisional Railway Manager’s (DRM) office in Vadodara, Western Railway. The accused were allegedly collecting large sums of bribes to favor candidates in the Limited Departmental Examination of Western Railway.
CBI has arrested six individuals, including the Senior Divisional Personnel Officer (IRPS: 2008), Divisional Personnel Officer (IRPS: 2018), Deputy Chief Commercial Manager, Churchgate, Mumbai, Deputy Station Superintendent, a Nursing Superintendent at the Divisional Railway Hospital, Sabarmati (Ahmedabad), and a private individual. Searches were conducted at 11 locations, including Vadodara, Gujarat, resulting in the seizure of a 650-gram gold bar, approximately ₹5 lakh in cash, electronic devices, and incriminating documents.
The case was registered on February 18, 2025, against three railway officials and a private individual on allegations of conspiring to collect bribes from candidates appearing in the Railway Departmental Examination. The accused allegedly promised candidates selection in the upcoming examination in exchange for money. The Divisional Personnel Officer reportedly directed the Deputy Chief Commercial Manager to compile a list of at least ten candidates willing to pay bribes. The Deputy Chief Commercial Manager then involved the Deputy Station Superintendent and a private individual to contact and collect money from the candidates.
Investigations further revealed that the Deputy Chief Commercial Manager contacted a jeweler in Vadodara to purchase approximately 400 grams of gold using unaccounted cash. He later traveled to Anand to meet the private individual and collect the cash. Additionally, a Nursing Superintendent was intercepted in possession of 650 grams of gold, allegedly acquired from the jeweler for approximately ₹57 lakh. This gold was reportedly intended for delivery to the Senior Divisional Personnel Officer (IRPS: 2018) of Western Railway, Vadodara.
The arrested individuals will be presented before the CBI Special Court No. 7 in Bhadra, Ahmedabad, today. The investigation is ongoing.
