The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Section Engineer (Quality Check) posted at the Traction Machine Workshop of Central Railway in Nashik. The arrest was made while the official was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹15,000 from a private company representative.

The case came to light after the proprietor of a Nashik-based private company approached the CBI with a complaint. He alleged that the engineer demanded an illegal bribe of ₹15,000 in exchange for issuing a Quality Check Report. This report was related to the supply of wooden packing wedges delivered under a valid purchase order to the railway department. The businessman stated that without this report, the supply would not be officially approved or processed.

Acting promptly on the complaint, the CBI registered a formal case and laid a trap to catch the accused in the act. As planned, the complainant met the engineer and handed over the bribe amount. During this exchange, CBI officials intervened and arrested the engineer on the spot while he was accepting the bribe.

Following the arrest, CBI teams conducted searches at both the official workplace and residential premises of the accused. During these searches, several incriminating documents and materials were recovered which may serve as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

The investigation is still underway to uncover if more individuals are involved in the case or if this is part of a larger pattern of corruption. The agency is also examining the documents seized during the raids for further leads.

Former Enforcement Directorate Officer Sentenced to 3 Years Imprisonment for Accepting Bribe

On July 25, 2025, the CBI Court in Bengaluru convicted and sentenced Lalit Bazad, a former Enforcement Officer of the Enforcement Directorate, to three years of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹5.5 lakh. At the time of the incident, Bazad was posted in the Bengaluru Directorate on deputation from the Central Goods & Services Tax and Central Excise department in Chennai.

The conviction came after it was proven that Bazad had demanded and accepted a bribe of ₹5 lakh from a private individual. According to the complaint, the officer misused his official position and threatened the complainant with illegal harm to his business and reputation. He allegedly tried to coerce the individual by warning of prolonged and unnecessary legal proceedings unless the bribe was paid.

  1. Such traps set by CBI/ ED are prone to challenge. Some times in the pretext of returning money or for some other purpose also money are handed over by decoy and these guys (CBI) arrest them just to boost up their strike rate and cover their failure in deseving / big cases.
