The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials of the Income Tax Department in Patna, including an Assistant Director (IRS officer), an Inspector, and a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) for taking a bribe of ₹2 lakh.
Why Were They Arrested?
The CBI received a complaint that these officials had demanded ₹2 lakh from a person. In return, they promised to release ₹13 lakh that had earlier been seized from the complainant’s brother-in-law at the airport and to not start any further inquiry or investigation against him. This seizure of ₹13 lakh was reported to the Income Tax Department, which is how the case started.
Caught Red-Handed by CBI
After registering the case on 15 July 2025, the CBI planned a trap operation. During the trap the officials were caught red-handed while accepting the ₹2 lakh bribe. The entire bribe amount was recovered by the CBI. It was found that the money was being collected on the direction of the IRS officer.
Search and Court Action
The CBI also conducted searches at three places in Patna, linked to the accused officers, on the same day (15 July 2025). Later, all three accused were produced in the Special CBI Court-1 in Patna, which granted the CBI 3-day custody of the officers for further investigation.
The case is still being investigated by the CBI, and further details will come out as the inquiry continues.
