Bank Unions Announce Demonstrations on 12 August Over 5-Day Banking Demand
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced joint demonstrations on 12 August 2026 to demand early implementation of 5-day banking. The demonstrations will be held after office hours in all State Capitals and other important towns and centres across the country.
It has been more than two years, but the demand for 5-day banking has still not been fulfilled. Bank employees also observed a one-day strike in January 2026 to press for the demand, but it did not result in any decision on the implementation of 5-day banking.
5-Day Banking Demand Still Pending
In its circular dated 4 August 2026, UFBU said that after the successful strike on 27 January 2026, bank employees and officers were expecting a positive response from the Government on the 5-day banking demand.
According to UFBU, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) had agreed to 5-day banking in the MOU as well as the Settlement/Joint Note, and the matter was recommended to the Government. However, a final decision is still awaited.

Unions Question Delay as Next Wage Revision Process Begins
UFBU said that the Government has asked banks to start the process for the next wage revision settlement, which is due in November 2027. However, the unions said there is still no decision on the pending issue of introducing 5-day banking.
The unions have therefore decided to raise the matter again and seek an early decision from the Government.

Demonstrations on 12 August 2026
UFBU has decided to organise joint demonstrations on 12 August 2026 after office hours in all State Capitals and other important towns and centres. All member unions and bank employees have been requested to participate fully in the programme.
Strike Action May Be Considered Next
UFBU has also said that the unions will meet shortly to decide their further course of action, including possible strike action. However, no new strike date has been announced yet.
The circular has been signed by leaders of AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBOC and INBEF.
