Bhupinder Singh, Chief Manager of Punjab & Sind Bank’s Aero City Branch, reportedly died by suicide on October 15, 2026. He was found dead inside his car near Chuni Kalan village.

Bhupinder Singh was known among his colleagues for maintaining a clean service record throughout his banking career. The incident has raised concerns about possible work-related pressure, alleged financial exploitation, questionable loan transactions, and the possible involvement of influential persons.

During his posting at the bank’s Sector 22 Branch in Chandigarh, an intermediary with connections to senior officials at the bank’s Corporate Office in New Delhi approached him about high-value loan proposals. According to the union, he was allegedly pressured or induced to process certain loan proposals. But these high-value loan proposals quickly turned NPA.

Additional loans were subsequently disbursed through fictitious transactions in an attempt to manage earlier transactions and prevent the loan accounts from becoming non-performing assets (NPAs). The union has requested an investigation into the origin of the loan proposals, the role of intermediaries, the approval process, the actual beneficiaries, and the circumstances in which the loans were sanctioned and disbursed.

Alleged Deposit of ₹25 Lakh from Personal Funds

The All India Punjab & Sind Bank Officers Union stated that certain borrowers or beneficiaries allegedly assured Bhupinder Singh that they would arrange the required funds and regularise the loan accounts. He relied on these assurances and continued trying to prevent the accounts from becoming NPAs.

The union further alleged that Bhupinder Singh deposited approximately ₹25 lakh from his personal funds in connection with the loan accounts or to meet the resulting financial obligations. The union has requested a specialised financial investigation to establish the source and destination of the alleged ₹25 lakh, examine the relevant bank entries, identify the beneficiaries and trace the complete flow of funds. It has also asked investigators to determine whether the officer was financially exploited, coerced, threatened or subjected to unlawful pressure.

Suicide Note

A typed suicide note was recovered in connection with the incident. The note mentions seven alleged defaulters or persons whose roles require investigation.

The union has requested the police to secure and preserve the note and conduct an appropriate forensic examination to verify its authenticity, authorship and evidentiary value. It has also asked investigators to examine the seven persons referred to in the note, along with anyone else whose role emerges during the investigation.

The union stressed that no person should be presumed guilty before the evidence is examined. It also said that the investigation should go beyond the immediate circumstances of the death and examine related financial transactions, communications, assurances, and any threats or pressure that may have contributed to the incident.

Union Seeks Investigation by an Independent Specialised Team

The union expressed concern that the case could involve people with considerable financial resources, professional connections or influence. It said that an investigation without adequate independence or specialised expertise might fail to establish the complete sequence of events.

The case may involve complex banking transactions, alleged fictitious lending, financial transfers, possible criminal conspiracy and the question of abetment of suicide.

The union has requested that the investigation be entrusted to an independent and suitably qualified team, such as a senior-level police team or a specialised financial-crime unit, as considered legally appropriate by the authorities. It has also asked that the investigating team remain free from influence by anyone holding an official position or having connections with the bank’s management.

Demands put forward by Union

The union has made several specific requests to the Punjab Police, including:

  • Conducting a fair, impartial and speedy investigation under the supervision of a senior police officer.
  • Preserving the reported suicide note and verifying its authenticity through forensic examination.
  • Investigating the seven persons reportedly referred to in the note and any other persons whose roles emerge during the inquiry.
  • Examining loan proposals, sanction and disbursement records, subsequent loan transactions, account statements, audit records and internal communications relating to the Sector 22 Branch and other concerned branches.
  • Tracing the alleged personal deposits of approximately ₹25 lakh and identifying their source, destination and beneficiaries.
  • Examining the role of the alleged intermediary and all officials who processed, recommended, sanctioned or supervised the relevant transactions, as well as anyone who may have benefited from them, irrespective of designation or seniority.
  • Securing electronic and documentary evidence, including emails, official communications, legally obtainable call records, messages, CCTV footage and banking-system audit trails.
  • Taking immediate steps to prevent the destruction or manipulation of records and ensuring that witnesses vulnerable to pressure are dealt with in accordance with the law.

The union has also requested appropriate legal action under applicable provisions if the evidence establishes offences relating to abetment of suicide, cheating, criminal conspiracy, forgery, financial fraud or any other cognisable offence.
