Elon Musk calls Ambani the real PM of India

Dear Prime Minister Ambani,

Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India. Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?

There are many areas of India, as there are in all countries, with no Internet access, which denies children the opportunity for education and for small businesses the opportunity to sell their goods to a global market. Starlink would change their lives for the better.

Also, Starlink has proven to be essential for saving lives during natural disasters throughout the world, when all other communications systems have failed, so you would also be helping save men, women and children throughout India.

Elon Musk also shared news clips of funds shared by Reliance with BJP. The news clip of Aljazeera alleged that Reliance funded firm boosted BJP’s campaigns on Facebook. Another report by Indian Express alleged that Reliance linked Qwik Supply donated Rs.385 crore to BJP.

What’s the issue?

The friction stems from a long-running policy battle over how satellite internet spectrum is distributed. Reliance Jio previously lobbied for a spectrum auction model—which would favor established domestic players—while Starlink pushed for administrative assignment. Although India ultimately sided with the administrative model, Starlink’s commercial rollout has remained stalled.

India’s Ministry of Communications rejected Musk’s claims of discrimination as “baseless,” clarifying that three operators—Reliance Jio, Eutelsat OneWeb, and Starlink—hold licenses and are subject to the exact same rigorous national security evaluations before operating. The dispute also sparked local political arguments, with opposition leader Rahul Gandhi chiming in to mock the government’s perceived corporate favoritism.

Earlier in June 2026, Indian intelligence agencies froze Starlink’s approval momentum following global reports that Starlink terminals were active inside unauthorized or conflict zones like Iran. This raised a sovereign concern within New Delhi: can a foreign, U.S.-based operator be effectively controlled or turned off by the Indian government during periods of intense geopolitical tension or local emergencies? Security agencies are evaluating these fail-safes before signing off.

Even if Starlink satisfies all security agencies, it cannot beam internet without radio frequencies. While the Indian government rejected Mukesh Ambani’s push for a spectrum auction and agreed to use an administrative assignment process (which Starlink preferred), the pricing framework and final formula for this spectrum allocation are still waiting for a clearance from the Union Cabinet.

Because Starlink is a subsidiary of the U.S.-based SpaceX, it requires specific financial and regulatory regulatory sign-offs regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) permissions within India’s sensitive telecom market. The Indian government maintains that these hurdles are not unique to Elon Musk, noting that competing entities like Bharti Airtel’s backed Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications are being processed through identical security evaluations.
