Concerns Over Work Pressure and Toxic Behaviour

AIBOBOA reminded the top management about its earlier meeting with the MD on 23rd July 2025, where the Association had raised concerns about excessive online meetings and instances of threatening behaviour by some senior officials. The MD had taken corrective steps that helped in reducing the number of long Teams meetings and addressing such behavioural issues.

The Association once again highlighted a few regional issues of harassment and pressure, and the CGM–HR assured that these would be looked into promptly.

A committee of Chief General Managers (CGMs) is also preparing a new campaign calendar to limit campaigns to 3–4 per day so that officers’ workload becomes more manageable.

Discussion on Officer’s Suicide Case

The Association also raised the tragic suicide of officer Ishwar Chand Jha, expressing deep concern over such incidents caused by extreme work stress. Preventive measures to avoid similar cases in the future were discussed. The MD directed the HR department to take new initiatives to boost employee morale and ensure a healthier work environment.

Additionally, it was informed that 2,500 new officers will join by December 2025, which will help reduce the burden on existing staff.

Key Points Shared by MD & CEO, Dr. Debadatta Chand

Dr. Chand addressed the gathering and made several important announcements:

  1. Respect Added as the 7th Core Value:
“Respect” has been added to the Bank’s core values. Both management and the Association must ensure it is practiced across all levels.
  2. Focus on Work-Life Balance:
Officers and their families’ well-being must be protected. A healthy work-life balance is essential for motivation and long-term growth.
  3. Culture of Empathy and Integrity:
Officers should maintain strong moral values and support one another with empathy and mutual respect.
  4. Zero Tolerance for Misbehaviour:
The MD made it clear that any form of misbehaviour will not be tolerated at any level. Officers should start each day with a positive attitude and cheerful outlook.

Staff Welfare and Operational Improvements

The Bank informed that ceilings under several staff benefit schemes, including the Furniture Scheme, will be revised upwards. Other schemes are also under review to improve officer benefits.

Importantly, the Bank confirmed that officers’ mobile numbers will not be shared with back offices for customer communication — a step to protect privacy and prevent after-hours disturbances.

The Association also presented a 56-point operational agenda along with 82 financial and non-financial issues. These were discussed separately with different department heads to find practical solutions for day-to-day challenges faced by staff.

Operational issues with the Digital Department were also discussed with Mrs. Sheetal, CGM–Digital, and another meeting will be arranged to continue resolving such problems.

Major Takeaways from the Meeting

  1. Top Management Sensitivity:
The MD & CEO reiterated the Bank’s commitment to officers’ dignity, respect, mental health, and work-life balance.
  2. Recruitment Drive:
Around 5,000 new employees will be recruited to reduce pressure on existing staff.
  3. Teams Meeting Restrictions:
Online meetings will be restricted to between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Any behavioural issues during such meetings will be dealt with strictly.
  4. Operational and Technological Issues:
The Bank will work closely with the Association to ensure quick relief and solutions to operational difficulties.
  5. Improved Staff Welfare Schemes:
Several benefit schemes, including furniture and housing lease reimbursements, are being revised so that officers are not financially burdened.
