The Velachery police are searching for a woman who mysteriously left behind more than 1.25 kg of gold jewellery worth nearly ₹1.5 crore inside a private bank five days ago.

On December 5, a woman who introduced herself as Sharmila Banu walked into the bank wearing a burqa. She told staff she wanted to open a new account and asked about the locker facility. She also claimed that her husband already had an account in the same branch.

Since the concerned officers were busy, she was asked to wait. Moments later, she left the bank saying she would return with the required documents — but she never came back.

After some time, staff noticed an unattended bag inside the bank. When they checked it, they found gold bars and bracelets. The bank’s audit team confirmed the gold was genuine, after which the jewellery was handed over to the Velachery police.

Police have now registered a case and launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from inside and outside the bank is being closely examined. Officers are looking into multiple angles to identify the woman and find out how and why such a huge amount of gold was abandoned.
