The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) held massive demonstrations across the country on 12 August 2026 to demand the early implementation of the commitment for 5-day banking. Employees and officers participated in large numbers at State Capitals, District Headquarters and various town centres.

The UFBU said that bank employees have been waiting for a positive response from the Government on the introduction of 5-day banking. The unions said that after the successful strike held on 27 January 2026, they expected progress on the issue but still after 6 months, there is no response from the government.

The issue has been delayed and there has been no clear decision from the Government. At the same time, the Government has asked banks to begin the process for the next wage revision settlement, which is due in November 2027. The unions have therefore decided to once again highlight the pending issue of 5-day banking.

UFBU said the demonstrations received a large response from bank employees and officers and reflected growing concern among bank staff over the delay.

The UFBU said it will meet shortly to decide its further course of action. Strike may also be announced if the issue remains unresolved.
