There is a good news for all the government employees in West Bengal. The Government of West Bengal has declared 16 August 2025 as holiday for Janmastami celebrations. The holiday has been declared under NI Act 1881.
Accordingly, the State Government Offices, Local Bodies, Statutory Bodies, Boards, Corporations and Undertakings controlled or owned by State Government, educational Institutions, other offices/institutions under the control of Government of West Bengal will remain closed on 16th August, 2025 (Saturday).

Earlier All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) had requested the Chief Minister of West Bengal – Mamata Banerjee, to declare holiday on 16 August 2025. In its letter, the union pointed out that while the state government has declared Janmashtami on August 15, 2025, all traditional almanacs (Bengali Panjikas) mark the festival on August 16, 2025.
AIBOC emphasized that Janmashtami holds “undeniable devotional and religious significance” and is generally observed with fasting and worship. They argued that if the holiday remains on August 15, employees in the banking and financial services sector would be unable to properly celebrate the festival on its actual date.
