The transfer controversy in Union Bank of India is still not over. Several months have passed since the matter reached the High Court, but no decision has been announced so far.
Several employees, including women officers, are being severely affected by the delay. Let’s understand the full controversy.
A representative of Union Bank of India officers has submitted a representation to the Madras High Court requesting an early pronouncement of the reserved order in the bank’s transfer-related case. The representation was submitted by Sreenath Induchoodan on behalf of affected officers.
The request relates to WMP No. 18111 of 2026 in WP No. 16860 of 2026, which is currently pending before the Madras High Court.
Transfer Orders Issued to Thousands of Officers
According to the representation, Union Bank of India issued its Transfer Policy through Staff Circular No. 101885-2026 dated March 16, 2026. Based on this policy, transfer orders were issued to approximately 6,700 officers up to Scale III during April 2026.
The officers were directed to report at their new places of posting on May 4, 2026.
Officers Had Already Started Relocation Process
The representation states that many officers had already taken major steps to relocate after receiving their transfer orders.
Many officers had:
- Vacated their rented houses.
- Informed landlords and shifted household items.
- Arranged admissions for children in new schools.
- Obtained Transfer Certificates from existing schools.
- Made travel arrangements for family members.
- Shifted elderly parents or arranged medical treatment at the new location.
Some officers who had received transfers closer to their hometowns on medical, compassionate, or family grounds had also started reorganizing their lives based on the new postings.
High Court Passed Interim Order
The matter took a new turn when the Madras High Court passed an interim order on April 30, 2026.
The Court stayed the operation of Clause 5.4 of the Transfer Policy in respect of women officers. Later, on May 7, 2026, the Court reserved orders in WMP No. 18111 of 2026 and extended the interim order until the disposal of the petition.
Bank Put Relieving Process on Hold
Following the interim order, Union Bank of India issued an Inter-Office Letter dated May 1, 2026.
The letter directed that the relieving of all officers up to Scale III should be kept on hold until further instructions.
As a result, thousands of officers who had already received transfer orders were left without clarity regarding their future postings.
Families Facing Serious Difficulties
The representation says that the uncertainty is affecting not only officers but also their families.
Many officers do not know whether they should move to the new station or continue staying at their present location. Families are finding it difficult to make important decisions related to housing, education, healthcare, and family responsibilities.
- Children are uncertain about which school they will attend.
- Spouses do not know whether to relocate.
- Elderly parents who were expecting care from transferred officers continue to face difficulties.
- Officers with medical needs are unable to make long-term plans.
Housing and Education Problems Increase
The representation highlights several practical difficulties faced by officers.
Some officers had already vacated rented houses, and in many cases those houses have been rented out to other tenants. Officers who shifted household goods to new locations are facing additional financial expenses.
Children who had already received Transfer Certificates from their schools are also facing uncertainty regarding their continued education.
The representation states that many families who expected to reunite after transfers are once again living separately because of the delay.
Request for Early Pronouncement of Order
The representation respectfully requests the Madras High Court to pronounce the reserved order at the earliest possible date.
According to the representation, an early decision would bring much-needed clarity to thousands of officers, their families, and the bank administration, allowing everyone to make future plans with certainty.
