In a heartbreaking incident from Karhal, Mainpuri, a newborn baby boy lost his life after a nurse at a community health center (CHC) allegedly refused to provide proper care because the family couldn’t pay a bribe of Rs 5,100. The baby’s father, Sujit Kumar, claimed that despite their pleas, the nurse left the newborn on a table, wrapped only in a cloth, for about 40 minutes.

According to Kumar, the nurse refused to hand over the baby until the payment was made. By the time the family could gather the money, the baby’s health had deteriorated. They rushed the newborn to another medical center, but tragically, he died on the way.

The period immediately after birth is crucial for a newborn’s survival. This “golden hour” is essential for mother-baby bonding and helps the baby adjust to life outside the womb. Unfortunately, the lack of timely care in this case proved fatal.

Investigation Launched:

Chief medical officer (CMO) Dr. RC Gupta announced that a three-member panel has been set up to investigate the incident. The role of an ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker is also being looked into. Dr. Gupta assured that strict action would be taken if negligence is found.

Sujit Kumar, a resident of Onha Patara, wrote to the district magistrate, the CMO, and higher authorities in Lucknow, demanding justice for his newborn son. He recounted the events that led to the tragedy in his letter.

Allegations of Misbehavior and Bribery:

Kumar explained that his wife, Sanjali, was admitted to CHC Karhal on September 18 after she started experiencing labor pains. The hospital staff allegedly misbehaved with her and did not provide proper care. Sanjali gave birth to a baby boy around 4 a.m. the next day.

Following the delivery, the staff allegedly demanded Rs 5,100 from the family. When Kumar could not pay, nurse Jyoti placed the baby on a table, wrapped in a cloth. As the baby’s condition worsened, the family informed the staff, who then referred them to Saifai Medical College. Sadly, the baby passed away on the way. Doctors at Saifai later confirmed that the death was due to the lack of proper care during delivery.

ASHA Worker’s Role Under Scrutiny:

Kumar also revealed that when there was a delay in the delivery, the family requested the ASHA worker to call a doctor. The ASHA worker allegedly told them that “Jyoti was a doctor,” but the family later discovered that Jyoti was a nurse. This confusion and the delay in care further complicated the situation, leading to the baby’s tragic death.

The family is now calling for strict action against those responsible, hoping that their son’s death will bring attention to the misconduct and negligence at the health center.
