Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A shocking theft has taken place at the State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Bijauli, Gwalior. A masked thief broke into the bank’s strong room late at night and stole 734 cheques that were kept safely inside a cabinet. The entire incident was captured on the bank’s CCTV cameras.
How the Theft Happened:
The incident took place between 12 midnight and 1 AM when the bank was closed. The thief, who appeared to be around 25–30 years old, wore a white scarf to cover his face. He entered the bank by breaking a window from the backside. After getting inside, he went directly to the strong room.
The thief then broke open the strong room’s channel gate and searched the file cabinet box inside. From there, he stole 734 post-dated cheques belonging to 112 different customers. The total number of cheques stored was 740, but 6 cheques of one customer named Bhanu Pratap Singh were left behind in an envelope.
What the CCTV Shows:
The CCTV footage clearly shows the masked thief entering the bank, going towards the strong room, and later walking out with the stolen cheques. Interestingly, even though he managed to open the strong room and steal such important documents, no alarm went off during the incident.
After the Theft:
The theft was discovered the next day when the bank opened on Monday morning. Branch Manager Neeraj Kumar Dhayodi immediately informed the Bijauli police station. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case and started an investigation.
Police have confirmed that they have the CCTV footage and are trying to identify and catch the thief using that evidence. They believe the thief had planned the theft carefully in advance.
Concerns and Questions:
The bank management is surprised and worried:
- Why did the thief steal only post-dated cheques?
- Why were 6 cheques of one customer left behind?
- How did the thief enter the strong room so easily?
- Why didn’t the alarm system work?
These questions have raised serious concerns about the bank’s security arrangements. An internal security review is likely to be conducted soon.
Meanwhile, the bank has started contacting the affected customers and has assured them that their accounts and money are safe.
